Problems Not Being Fixed, Residents Say

Residents Claim Negligence Against Apartment Complex

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Regina Wright said her refrigerator is unusable, her bathtub has been running for months, and when the new upstairs neighbors do dishes, her ceiling leaks.

Now she said she's had it with the management at the Cimarron Apartments in Arlington, which she said won't fix it the problems.

"I can't cook in my kitchen because I'm scared of the germs and my kids might get sick," Wright said.

Wright is not the only person complaining. Some tenants at the Cimarron Apartments put up a video on YouTube showing the conditions they live in.

"You just do what you have to do. I don't know how much longer I'm going to be able to do it," Wright said.

Channel 4's Scott Johnson stopped by the complex to find out what was happening inside and why. The management asked him to leave the property, but before he did, one of the property managers told him some of the complaints were coming from vindictive residents who don't pay their rent. The apartment complex claims the conditions are not negligence on their part.

Wright said she did have payments to make on her rent, but she said she didn't want to make them until the repairs inside her apartment were made.

Code Enforcement said it has cited the landlord for failure to maintain plumbing standards. Code Enforcement said it wasn't contacted by Wright, who they said is being evicted for failure to pay rent.

"It is frustrating because I have kids," Wright said. "If it was just me, it would be different."
